Are you giving it your all every day? You may think you are, but working really hard until you feel burned out is actually counterproductive.

The truth is, your day would be more productive by trying to implement a few of these fun or unexpected productivity hacks. As a small business ourselves, CUE knows that you have 101 things to get done today, but everybody on the team uses these tips in one way or another to enjoy our day at work.

1. Smile

Studies show that people who smile are happier. Happy people tend to be more productive. Simple.

2. Take a break

The average human adult brain cannot focus for more than 20 minutes at a time. So after 20 minutes of dedicated work time, take a five-minute break. Clear your mind, refresh yourself before giving it your all again for the next 20 minutes.

BUT don’t over break! Sometimes we can go a little overboard, especially if our next task is not the most riveting. A 5-minute break could turn into a 15-minute bender where we end up completely off track. Set a timer for your break. There are plenty of programs and applications that allow you to limit keep track of your time.

3. Communicate with someone

If you feel you’re wasting lots of time struggling with a particular problem — talk it over with someone. You may end up realizing a new way to solve said problem or the person you’re talking to may have good insight or solution. This, in essence, saves you time being lost or frustrated.

4. Find your productive time

What time of the day are you most productive? Find out and set your most important/daunting tasks up for that time. Also, make sure you actually block out that time for yourself so that you can focus during your peak periods. Be strategic about when you schedule team meetings, phone calls and when you hide away and get stuff done.

5. Blow off steam

Everyone gets stressed out, even if they don’t show it. Don’t let your stress build up and explode unexpectedly. We all manage our stress differently. Many people find exercise a great stress reliever, even if it is going on a ten-minute walk outside during lunch. Other people have hobbies like checking out new restaurants, spending time with friends. However, we will not condone what Frank Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia says: “push it down with some brown” a shot of whiskey or bourbon to help alleviate stress.

6. Rate your tasks

Make a to-do list, so all of your tasks are in one place. Then, rate the tasks on a scale from one to five, with one being the least pressing and five being the most pressing. This will allow you to focus your day more on meaningful tasks rather than ones that could be pushed off for a few days.

7. Finish what you’ve started

Cross tasks off your list once you’ve finished them. Make sure you complete each task fully and don’t just start on the next one because the previous task got too daunting. By not allowing yourself to go on to the next task without completing the prior task will leave you with zero unfinished tasks, which can be overwhelming

8. Have fun!

Take time out of your day to do something that you want to do: go for a walk in the park, go have a drink with friends, go see a movie, etc. By allowing yourself to recharge your batteries you will be more productive for the tasks tomorrow.
