As much as we plan ahead, there is always something to do last minute. Here are 6 tips to help you stay on top of everything, and maybe even feel rested, during the holiday season!

  1. Exercise

Not enough people get up and exercise, but to “exercise” does not mean you have to run 6 or 7 miles a day: even walking can help you reap the benefits of exercise.

The direct healthy benefits are: lowered blood pressure, reduced inflammation and reduced insulin resistance among many other factors. The indirect benefits of these physical health boosts are that they help contribute to increasing your brain power. With exercise, the brain also releases endorphins, the feel-good hormone, to help with energy and mood throughout the day!

2. Plan & Prioritize

Create a plan for each day, to help you keep your tasks in check. If you have pressing tasks or bigger projects due, you should work on these first. To help break down bigger tasks, make smaller and action-based plans for each step in the task to make it less overwhelming. When it does start to get overwhelming, defer to doing simpler tasks that require less of your brain power.

3. Take Time Off Where You Can

The holidays can be a time where business picks up, but that does not mean you neglect or sacrifice your wellbeing and family time because these are important to keeping your overall health! Schedule in family time as though it were a meeting Remember to also separate your work life from your family life, if possible, to avoid bringing stress home! Spend two minutes in the car, before going inside, mindfully leaving your work behind.

4. Say “No”

Time is, unfortunately, not limitless. Sometimes, you might need to say “no” to that happy hour, or the holiday party that would overlap with another holiday party and whatever other events may pop up. Being realistic about how much you can do allows you to more fully enjoy each event you attend without panicking about the next one.

5. Ask for Flexible Time

Schedules can be all out of whack during the holidays, and flexible work schedules can help bring your productivity to an equilibrium. Request to work at home, or come in early and stay later and vice versa. It will keep your day less constrained to certain times, and help you be able to get everything you need to get done in both your personal and work life.

6. Reflect

The holidays are a perfect time for reflection: on yourself, your past year, your work, to name a few topics. Reflection can help re-center you to be more in the moment, instead of “what could be” or “what needs to get done” and calm you down in this lovely but stressful time.
